MOORE FUN / MARY'S LOOP

RATING

Joel Schaefer on the Moore Fun ridge high above the Colorado River and Mary's Loop

COMMENTS: Sick, twisty, and technical single track for advanced riders along the Moore Fun ridge. This a "Moore Fun" way of returning to the Kokopelli parking lot than riding east on the access road after an easy Mary's ride. Occasionally ridden as an out-and-back with more uphill riding east to west. Tight, tough moves required on the west end of this trail. The ride is described here as a Mary's Loop extension from west to east. Difficult when wet!

STARTING POINT: From Grand Junction take I-70 to the Loma Exit (Exit #15). Cross over the interstate to the south and turn right on gravel road.  Just short of the weigh station, turn left, through the and follow the frontage road for about 1/2 mile until you come to a the parking area.

RIDE TYPE: LOOP EXTENSION WITH MARY'S LOOP

TRAIL TYPE: SINGLE TRACK 90%, DOUBLETRACK 10%

ELEVATION GAIN: 635 foot gain and 728 foot loss = -221 feet

DISTANCE: 4.3 miles

APPROXIMATE RIDE TIME: 2-3 hours with Mary's Loop, 2 hours out and back Moore Fun

DIFFICULTY: Advanced with a long hills and very technical sections

RIDE DESCRIPTION: Ride most of Mary's Loop to the top of a saddle. At the top of the saddle, there is a large BLM map of the area and a cattle guard. Mack Ridge trail heads west while Moore Fun heads east. Continue east up to the top of the ridge. This is the most difficult section. At mile 1.3 you reach the first lookout point on the top of the ridge. Continue down the trail to mile 1.9 where you reach the end of the ridge and start a steep descent back to the road where you started on Mary's Loop. There is a very sharp right turn at mile 3.6. This turn can be dangerous. Be careful. At mile 4.3 you meet the improved road. Turn left and go another half mile back to the parking lot.

The 3 most difficult sections include the halfway switchbacks between tritrail cattle gate and 1st overlook, the short downhill after 2nd overlook and the lower maze section.

If ridden as out-and-back, park at Kokopelli lot and ride up the hill on the double track which hairpins and heads downward to another curve. Just beyond it, at mile 0.3, is the signed trailhead going west on singletrack. Do not branch southwest onto a doubletrack that heads along a ridge to nowhere. You will eventually get back to the saddle that intersects Mary's Loop.
